IPTV EPG Guide — Electronic Programme Guide Explained

Understand IPTV EPG, configure it in your player, add custom EPG sources, and fix missing programme data.

What Is an IPTV EPG?

EPG stands for Electronic Programme Guide. It is the on-screen TV schedule that shows you what is currently playing on each channel, what is coming up next, and what programmes are scheduled throughout the day. If you have ever used the programme guide on Sky Q or Freeview, you are already familiar with the concept. In IPTV, the EPG serves the same purpose but is delivered as data from your provider's server or an external EPG source.

A well-configured EPG transforms your IPTV experience from scrolling through a flat channel list (like teletext) into a visual TV guide where you can see programme names, descriptions, start times, and even genre icons at a glance. TiviMate's EPG grid is the closest thing to the Sky Q programme guide available in the IPTV world.

How EPG Data Works

EPG data is delivered as an XML file (typically in XMLTV format) containing programme listings for each channel. Your IPTV provider either includes EPG data automatically with your subscription or provides a separate EPG URL that you add to your player. When your IPTV app updates its EPG, it downloads this XML file and matches each programme listing to the corresponding channel using the tvg-id tag in your M3U playlist.

EPG data is not live — it is typically generated in advance and covers the next 3 to 7 days of programming. Your player downloads updated EPG data periodically (usually every 4 to 8 hours) to keep the guide current.

Configuring EPG in TiviMate

If you connected to your provider via Xtream Codes, EPG data loads automatically in most cases. Go to Settings, then EPG, and verify Auto-update is enabled. Set the update interval to every 6 hours for the best balance between data freshness and bandwidth usage. If your EPG is empty despite being connected via Xtream Codes, contact your provider — their EPG server may require separate activation.

Configuring EPG in IPTV Smarters

In Smarters Pro, EPG data loads automatically when using Xtream Codes login. For M3U URL connections, go to Settings and look for the EPG URL field. Enter the EPG XML URL your provider gave you. Press Update EPG and wait for the download to complete. Large EPG files with data for thousands of channels can take several minutes to process.

Using Third-Party EPG Sources

If your provider's EPG is incomplete or inaccurate, you can supplement it with third-party EPG sources. Several community-maintained EPG services provide UK channel listings in XMLTV format. Add the EPG URL to your player alongside your provider's EPG. Apps like TiviMate and OTT Navigator can merge data from multiple EPG sources, using the most complete data available for each channel.

Troubleshooting EPG Issues

EPG Shows Wrong Times

This is almost always a timezone issue. Check your device's system time and timezone settings. Set the timezone to GMT/BST (London) for UK channels. In your IPTV app, look for an EPG time offset setting and set it to 0 for UK. Some apps also have a “shift EPG” option — set this to match your local timezone if needed.

EPG Missing for Some Channels

EPG coverage depends on the channel ID matching between your playlist and the EPG source. If a channel's tvg-id in the M3U file does not match any entry in the EPG XML, that channel will have no programme data. Contact your provider to report specific channels missing EPG data — they may need to update the tvg-id mappings in your playlist.

EPG Not Updating

Force a manual EPG update in your app's settings. If it still fails, test the EPG URL in a web browser — it should download an XML file. If the browser shows an error, the EPG server is down. Clear your app's cache and try again after a few hours.
